Chiropractic Techniques: A Personalized Approach
People sometimes ask, “Why is it I can go to three different chiropractors and experience three different types of adjustments?” Every chiropractor seems to have their own technique or style of adjusting. Some chiropractors use only their hands, while some will use an instrument to adjust their patients, or a combination of the two. Some chiropractors will only use a subtle touch, while others utilize manual thrusts into the spine.
No matter the approach, the goal of chiropractic care is to provide a very specific force into the body which the body can utilize to bring the nervous system into a greater place of ease and adaptability. As chiropractors we are concerned with the location and correction of vertebral subluxations. Subluxations are those areas of the spine that are not moving properly, misaligned, or fixated that can impact the function of the spine and nervous system at those levels. The adjustment, no matter how it is delivered, helps to restore motion, alignment, and bring ease into the nervous system.
The way a chiropractor delivers an adjustment will be based upon their training, their proficiency in certain techniques, the recipient’s body, and the communication between the provider and patient. Although there are different chiropractic techniques, that does not necessarily mean that one technique is better than the other, but rather each person’s body may require a different approach. So much of this dance lies in the skills of the chiropractor and the relationship between the chiropractor and the patient. That is why it is so important to find a chiropractor you can communicate freely with, so you are comfortable expressing your preferences, needs, and goals with chiropractic care.
