Community: A Building Block of Health and Healing
As the days shorten and the air grows crisper, many of us begin to shift our routines inward — layering up, planning for holidays, and adjusting schedules around colder weather. These seasonal changes affect more than just our wardrobes. They influence how we connect with others. We often think that maintaining our well-being during this time of year looks like structured routines and strict diets, but building and maintaining our community is an important and measurable part of well-being that can be easy to overlook.
The World Health Organization’s defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Health is more than the mere absence of disease, and it is not only maintained by the latest TikTok “perfect morning lymphatic drainage” trend. The WHO definition reminds us that we must consider physical, mental, and social dimensions together for a healthy foundation. Let this serve as a reminder to us all that strong social connections are not a luxury; they are a pillar of good health.
Why social connection matters for health:
Emotional resilience: Close relationships and casual friendly interactions reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety. During darker, colder months, social contact helps regulate mood and combats seasonal dips in mental well-being.
Physical benefits: Social support encourages healthy behaviors and is associated with lower rates of chronic illness and faster recovery from injury.
Cognitive protection: Conversation and regular engagement with others stimulate the brain, supporting memory and cognitive function as we age.
Sense of purpose and belonging: Being part of a community fosters identity and meaning, which are essential for long-term mental health.
At Westwood Family Chiropractic, we view health holistically. Our approach recognizes that adjustments to the spine and nervous system are the foundational piece of a much larger picture. Also important are the relationships and social environments that surround each person. It is a priority to us that our office is a place where healing and community can exist hand in hand.
Some of our favorite moments of community are seeing practice members chatting in the waiting room, watching children play with each other in the yard, hearing encouragements from one mom to another, seeing our practice members at local events, and connecting with you all around town. Those moments create an atmosphere that helps to connect with our neighbors and build the kind of social network that supports healing outside of the office.
In honor of our focus on community this season, here are some practical ways to strengthen your “chiro” community in and out of our office:
When you’re in the waiting room, consider setting your phone aside in favor of a few minutes of face-to-face conversation. This can lift your mood, and you might even learn something useful or offer helpful encouragement to someone else.
Start small. A simple smile and a “how are you?” or complimenting someone can open the door to conversation. Many relationships begin with low-effort interactions that build over time.
Join our fall office events! In October, we are hosting a balance workshop, Dr. John is giving a lecture on Fall Prevention at the Westwood Council on Aging, and we will have our annual Halloween Party on October 30th.
Offer and accept help. Check in on neighbors, share information about local resources, or carpool to our office with your favorite chiro buddy. Small acts foster reciprocity and a stronger local network.
Maintain regular contact. It may be hard in all the craziness of life but make a point to reach out to friends and family during the cooler months. Even brief calls or walks can help maintain those bonds that make living in a town like Westwood truly special.
As the season turns colder, remember that health is more than the absence of disease, it includes the social ties that bring warmth, purpose, and support to daily life. At Westwood Family Chiropractic, we aim to support your whole-health journey — physically, mentally, and socially. Take advantage of the simple opportunities around you: say hello, share a story, and let community be part of your wellness plan this season.
