Valenspine’s Day: Celebrate Loving Your Spine

Happy Valenspine’s Day!

Valenspine’s Day is our favorite chiropractic holiday dedicated to celebrating spinal health and the small habits that keep you functioning your best! Whether you’re a long-time practice member at Westwood Family Chiropractic, or you’re simply looking to improve your spine habits this season, here are five practical ways to show your spine some love!

1. Move regularly, even on cold days

  • Take short movement breaks every 30–60 minutes if you sit for long periods. Stand up, march in place, or do gentle spinal twists to reduce stiffness and improve circulation.

  • Aim for 20–30 minutes of moderate activity most days—walking, dancing, or low-impact aerobics are good winter and beginner-friendly choices.

2. Pay attention to posture and ergonomics

  • Keep screens at eye level, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the floor when sitting. You can even use a lumbar roll or small pillow to support the natural curve of your lower back if needed.

  • When shoveling snow or lifting heavy items, bend at the hips and knees, keep the load close to your body, and avoid twisting while lifting.

3. Warm up properly before any outdoor activities

  • Whether it be shoveling snow or going for a short walk for fresh air, warming up beforehand reduces your risk of injury.

  • Cold muscles are more prone to strain. Warm up with light movement before doing outdoor chores or recreation.

4. Look at your sleep posture and mattress support

  • Get some quality sleep on a “back-friendly” mattress. Did you know it is recommended to replace your mattress every 5-8 years? But how do you pick a good mattress? Ultimately most of the selection process is up to personal preference, but the key is that there is uniformity of support throughout the mattress; wherever you sit or lay on the mattress each part of our body should feel equally supported.

  • Remember to use your pillows to work towards a more neutral spine. Try placing one pillow under the knees when on your back or between the knees when on your side.

5. Prioritize your chiropractic care and self-care practices

  • Regular visits to your chiropractor keep your nervous system, (your lifeline inside your spine) “tuned up” and “turned on” so every cell in your body can work at its best. Our flexible schedule for established practice members makes it easy to pop in when it works for your schedule.

This Valenspine’s Day, take a moment to check in with your spine. Small, consistent habits—movement, posture awareness, proper lifting, staying warm, and getting the right support at night—add up to meaningful improvements in comfort and function. From all of us at Westwood Family Chiropractic, Happy Valenspine’s Day!!
